  69. For Windows Write, however, the font names are the same, 
  70. but the style names are different. The chart below shows 
  71. the correct Windows Write style names for the typefaces 
  72. that may be included in this pack.

  74. The chart also shows the filenames for the fonts. Each installed 
  75. TrueType font is composed of a TTF file and an FOT file. The 
  76. Bitstream font pack disk(s) contain TTF files which you install 
  77. in Windows. During installation, Windows creates corresponding FOT 
  78. files. The chart lists the TTF files. FOT filenames are identical
  79. except they have an FOT extension.

  132. Bitstream MakeUp(TM) for Microsoft Windows

  135. Problem: Some Bitstream fonts do not appear when I 
  136. type them on the screen in MakeUp. Sometimes two
  137. names for the same font appear in the MakeUp font menu.
  138.  
  139. Solution: This happens if you have installed the same
  140. typeface twice: once as a TrueType font in the Microsoft
  141. Windows Control Panel, and again as a Speedo(TM) or 
  142. PostScript(R) Type 1 font in Bitstream FaceLift(TM) 2.0 
  143. for Microsoft Windows.
  144.  
  145. For example, Bitstream Cooper Black may be included in 
  146. this font pack. It also comes with FaceLift 2.0. If you install
  147. Bitstream Cooper Black as described in the documentation, 
  148. the problem described above occurs in Bitstream MakeUp.
  149.  
  150. To solve this problem, remove the TrueType font from the
  151. Windows Control Panel and leave the other font installed in
  152. FaceLift. To do this, follow the steps for removing TrueType
  153. fonts in the Bitstream Font Pack installation instructions. 
  154.  
  155. If an error message appears when selecting the fonts to 
  156. remove in the Windows Control Panel, you need to remove 
  157. them manually. First, check the section above in this
  158. README.TXT file to find out the filenames for the problem 
  159. typeface(s). Exit Windows. In DOS, change to the
  160. Windows System directory, and delete the TTF and FOT files
  161. for the typeface(s). (FOT filenames are identical to TTF
  162. filenames except they have an FOT extension.) Open Windows 
  163. and repeat the steps for removing TrueType fonts as described 
  164. in the installation instructions.

  168. Harvard Graphics(R) for Windows
  169. *******************************

  171. In some versions of Harvard Graphics for Windows, 
  172. Bitstream's TrueType fonts may not appear in the font 
  173. menu. If this problem occurs, contact Software Publishing 
  174. Corporation (SPC) for an update.
  175.

  178. Microsoft Excel for Windows
  179. ***************************

  181. Microsoft Excel 4.0 lets you select bold, italic, or 
  182. bold italic styles for each TrueType font in the font 
  183. style menu, regardless of whether these styles are 
  184. actually available. When you select a style that is not 
  185. available, this message appears: "This font style is 
  186. imitated for the display. The closest matching style 
  187. will be used for printing." 
  188.  
  189. For example, Embassy has only one style: normal. 
  190. However, Excel 4.0 lists bold, italic, and bold italic in 
  191. the font style menu. If you select Embassy and then 
  192. select Bold, the message mentioned above appears.
  193.  
  194. To avoid fonts that do not display or print correctly,
  195. select only the font styles that are available for each
  196. font. When you pick the correct font style, a message
  197. tells you that the font is a TrueType font. Also check
  198. the chart above to find out the styles available for 
  199. each font.

  203. Printing to PostScript Printers

  206. If you print to a PostScript printer, and your document 
  207. contains a large number of TrueType fonts or font sizes, 
  208. try printing one page at a time in order to speed printing 
  209. time.

  213. Font Embedding

  216. Bitstream's TrueType fonts support the Windows 3.1 editable 
  217. font embedding feature. This feature lets you take a 
  218. document created with a set of fonts on one computer, and 
  219. print it from another computer, without having to install 
  220. the fonts on the other computer.

  222. At the time this file was written, most Windows applications 
  223. had not yet implemented support for editable font embedding. 
  224. Contact your application vendor for information on the 
  225. application's support for this feature.

  232. Bitstream's TrueType fonts support kerning (the adjustment
  233. of space between pairs of characters). However, at the time
  234. this file was written, most Windows applications did not
  235. support kerning with TrueType fonts. Contact your application
  236. vendor for information on the application's support for 
  237. kerning TrueType fonts.

  244. TrueType fonts use Windows ANSI Extended character set.
  245. The Windows Character Map accessory shows the characters in
  246. this character set and how to access them. Contact Microsoft

  254. Font sizes of 7 or 8 point and below appear as Windows resident
  255. fonts instead of the selected TrueType fonts on the screen. 
  256. However, the fonts print correctly.

  260. EGA Display Monitors

  263. EGA monitors have fewer pixels than VGA monitors. This means 
  264. that fonts do not appear as precise on EGA monitors as on VGA 
  265. monitors. However, the fonts print correctly.

  272. Some of the Bitstream typeface designs may look familiar, 
  273. but the names may be unfamiliar. For licensing purposes, 
  274. Bitstream has assigned alternative names to certain typeface 
  275. designs. It is important to note that the use of an 
  276. alternative name has no bearing on the quality or 
  277. authenticity of the typeface design.
